These are the components we ourselves would buy—or recommend to friends and family. Each product category is divided into price ranges, with components listed in order of ascending cost (though a few items, like cables and accessories, are listed alphabetically for clarity’s sake). Each recommendation is also accompanied by a capsule review, the original reviewer’s name or initials, and the issue the review appeared in. Given that this is the high end, where components generally have long lifespans, some of our recommendations look back several years. At the same time, in an effort to be as selective and up-to-date as possible, we have dropped some components that appeared on last year’s list, usually because they have been discontinued but sometimes because fresh competition has caused us to reconsider the choice.

Two rooms, two super musical experiences: Durob Audio’s parallel lines, PrimaLuna and Mystère, were on display. In the PrimaLuna room the Dialogue Seven monoblocks ($5495/pr.) were driving the Sonus Faber Amati speakers supported by the new Dialogue Threepreamp ($2499), the Prologue Premium CD player ($3799), and DH Labs’ Revelation SP speaker cable, Air Matrix interconnect, and Red Wave power cords. With the Dialogue Sevens in triode mode, the sound was so smooth and relaxing that I found it most difficult to get off the listening sofa.

One of my favorite sounds of the show came out of the PrimaLuna room. Their sound was full of dynamics, texture, body and balance. Kevin Deal of PrimaLuna (seen here like a proud Papa) was one of the few people at CES who made sure that folks visiting his room got the right mix of information, listening time, and fun. At least that was the vibe when I visited. At Kevin’s feet are the DiaLogue Seven monoblocks ($5499 per pair), which Art Dudley wrote about in the December 2009 issue of Stereophile.
New in PrimaLuna’s line and playing in their fine-sounding system was the dual-mono DiaLogue Three preamplifier ($2499), which uses four 12AU7 tubes.
